Moving Preparation Checklist

Moving involves many logistical details including packing, scheduling transportation, transferring utilities, and updating important records. This checklist outlines key steps to help ensure a smooth transition to your new home.

How to Use This Checklist

Use this checklist in the weeks leading up to your move. Many tasks such as address changes and utility transfers require advance scheduling.

Planning Tip

Start early. Spreading moving tasks across several weeks helps avoid last-minute stress and ensures nothing important is overlooked.

2–3 Weeks Before Moving

  • 5
    Start Packing Non-Essential Items
Pack items that are not used daily such as seasonal clothing or décor.
  • 6
    Notify Important Contacts
Inform banks, insurance companies, and subscription services of your address change.
  • 7
    Schedule Utility Transfers
Arrange to disconnect utilities at your current home and activate them at your new address.
  • 8
    Update Mailing Address
Submit an address change with the postal service.

Moving Day

  • 13
    Supervise Loading
Ensure boxes and furniture are handled carefully and loaded properly.
  • 14
    Perform Final Walkthrough
Check all rooms, closets, and storage areas before leaving the property.
  • 15
    Secure Keys and Documents
Keep important items with you rather than placing them in the moving truck.
  • 16
    Confirm Utility Transfers
Verify that utilities are active at your new home.
